How much fragrance oil to use

Each fragrance oil has a maximum amount you can use in a reed diffuser. You will find it on the oil’s IFRA certificate under Category 10A. Do not go above it. Most oils in our diffuser range can be used at up to 25%; some have a lower limit.

Bottle At 25% fragrance At 20% fragrance
100 ml 25 ml oil + 75 ml Augeo 20 ml oil + 80 ml Augeo
200 ml 50 ml oil + 150 ml Augeo 40 ml oil + 160 ml Augeo

Step by step

  1. Measure the Augeo into a jug.
  2. Add the fragrance oil and stir well. Mixing in a jug keeps every bottle the same if you are making several at once.
  3. Fill the bottle using a small funnel. Leave room at the top so it does not overflow when you add the reeds.
  4. Add the reeds. Leave them for a short time to soak up some of the mixture, then turn them over so the wet ends are at the top. If you are using your own bottle and the reeds are too tall, trim them so the diffuser stands steady.
  5. Put the cap on for storage or sale, and your reed diffuser is ready.

To refresh the scent, turn the reeds over every few days.

Selling your reed diffusers? You need a CLP label

A reed diffuser made with fragrance oil and Augeo is a hazardous mixture, so it needs a CLP label before you sell it. If you use one of our diffuser oils in Augeo, at or below the strength shown for that oil, our free CLP label creator will make a ready-to-print label for you. Choose your oil, pick Reed diffuser, add your business details and download the PDF. For bottles of 125 ml or less, tick the small-bottle box.

If the label says “May be fatal if swallowed and enters airways”, a reed diffuser sold to the public must also have a child-resistant cap and a raised tactile warning on the bottle (CLP Annex II, sections 3.1 and 3.2).

If you use a different base, blend oils or add anything else, such as colour, the label has to be worked out again for your recipe.
